INTRODUCTION: The following programs are designed to provide classroom defensive driving training to specific driver groups. These programs are designed to be presented by departmental training officers, or by MIIA Loss Control staff. These programs are a combination of video segments, instructor "coaching" and driver response utilizing response books (workbooks). As these programs require some instructor preparation and run 2 - 6 hours, the loan period is 2-3 weeks.
The following are the descriptions of the courses:
- DDC-1- Coaching the Maintenance Vehicle Operator:
- Presentation This program will be conducted at your site by MIIA Loss Control staff. The program runs approximately 2-3 hours.

- DDC-2 Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator - Police:
- This program concentrates on the officers ability to read and react to traffic conditions during routine and emergency driving situations. The discussion format relies on officer participation throughoutencouraging them to utilize their driving experience and investigative skills to analyze and discuss critical defensive driving techniques. The program utilizes various educational techniques to focus instruction and encourage participation, i.e., audio-visual segments, self-appraisals, individual exercise, and group discussions.
- Presentation The training kit consisting of the instructors guide, videotape and sample response book are provided to the departments training officer for use on site. - DDC-3 Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator - Police Supplement:
- This one-hour module supplements the DDC-2-Police Program and addresses the effects of lights and siren on driving behaviorboth on the police officers and the driving public. Although this program can serve as stand-alone training, it can also be used as an additional segment of the Police program.
- Presentation The program consists of a videotape demonstrating the effective range of sirens and other factors that a police officer must consider and the emotional change in emergency personnel undergo when hearing a siren. It also includes an instructors guide.

- DDC-4. Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator II- Fire:
- This program enables fire apparatus operators to discuss defensive driving techniques that can reduce the risk of collisions in both emergency and non-emergency driving situations. Both novice and experienced drivers can benefit from the format which encourages examination of safe driving issues. Topics addressed include emergency and non-emergency defensive driving techniques, vehicle inspection, backing, vehicle characteristics, fire ground considerations, responding to a call, adverse weather conditions, braking techniques and night driving.
- Presentation Program consists of a videotape and fully scripted leaders guide and a sample operator response book. Additional response books are available from MIIA. (Call for current price). If presented in one block, the course runs approximately 4-6 hours. It can also be presented in individual segments. The program is provided to the Fire Department training officer for use on site.

- DDC-5 Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator -Fire Maneuvering Skills:
- This program details how to set up a driving course and conduct a low speed maneuvering skills session. Especially useful to those departments not having access to a permanent driving range. The video portion of the program demonstrates how to conduct a series of specific exercises including serpentine driving (backwards and forwards), backing to the right and left, backing with an assistant, etc. The exercises test the operators ability to drive the vehicle smoothly, judge spatial relations, maximize the use of mirrors and communicate with other squad members. The program also contains a video inspection segment. In addition to the videotape, the program includes administrators guides offering detailed information regarding safety procedures, course set up and program implementation.
- Presentation This program is provided to fire department training officers for use on site.

- DDC-6. Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator -Ambulance:
- This defensive driving course teaches practical defensive driving techniques, focusing on the operators ability to read traffic conditions, act accordingly and prevent collisions in both emergency and non-emergency situations. The program covers vehicle handling and design characteristics, the cushion of safety, city, two-lane and multi-lane driving, driving with lights and siren, special conditions (night driving, adverse conditions, hydroplaning, impaired drivers), backing and vehicle inspection.
- Presentation The kit consists of a scripted leaders guide, videotape and sample operator workbook. Additional workbooks are available from MIIA. (Call for current pricing When presented as a single segment, this course runs approximately 4-6 hours. However, like other CEVO courses, it can be presented in segments. The program is provided to the departmental training officer for presentation on site.

- DDC-7. Coaching the Emergency Vehicle Operator- Ambulance Maneuvering Skills:
- This program details how to set up a driving course and conduct low speed maneuvering skills sessions. - DDC-8. Coaching the School Bus Driver:
- Throughout this program, school bus drivers analyze and discuss safe driving issues capitalizing and building on their driving experience. While specifically focusing on defensive driving technique, the course emphasizes the following: vehicle inspection and bus stop procedures, the importance of good driver/student relations, analyzing actual collision situations and clarifying selected Americans with Disabilities Acts (ADA) issues.
- Presentation This program can either be provided to the School Department Transportation Training Officer for presentation on site, or presented by MIIA Loss Control personnel on site. The program consists of a driver video covering cushion of safety, situational driving, backing, railroad crossings, field trips, adverse weather conditions, driver-student relations, bus stop procedures, vehicle inspection and lift procedures. The program consists of a fully scripted instructors guide, driver video and workbooks for each driver. It also contains a short school bus safety video for kindergarten through third grade students. When presented in a single segment, the course runs approximately 4-6 hours; however, it can be presented in individual segments.

- DDC-9 Coaching the Utility Truck Driver II:
- This program is specifically designed for operators of public utility vehicles such as those used by municipal electric departments. Covers critical collision-prevention techniques, including familiarity with the vehicle, cushion of safety, blind spots, scanning, following distance, vehicle positioning, right and left turn procedures, safe backing and parking techniques, on-site safety measures, and more.
- Presentation This program can be conducted at your site by MIIA Loss Control staff. The program runs approximately 2-3 hours. It is Also available for loan for a 3 week period through the MIIA video lending program.

- DDC-10 Transporting the Passenger With Special Needs:
- This program has been designed for drivers who are responsible for the safe transportation of passengers with special needs. For these drivers, the term "safe transportation" means more than just driving; it also means interacting with and assisting passengers. The course which blends the two important functions of driving and assisting, relies on group participation and hands-on-practice. It covers both defensive driving and passenger assistance skills and techniques.
- Presentation This program can be conducted at your site by MIIA Loss Control staff or is available for loan (3 week maximum) The classroom program runs approx. 4-5 hours. Additional time should be allowed for the hands-on portion of the program.

- DDC-11 Coaching the Backhoe Operator:
- In todays work environment, it is critical that equipment operators know more than how to operate a backhoe. Operators must also learn how to safely transport and operate the backhoe in a variety of situations. This program includes segments on: equipment inspection, safe moving and operating procedures, safe excavating and loading procedures.
- Presentation This program can be conducted on site by MIIA Loss Control staff or is available on loan for a maximum of 3 weeks. The program runs approximately 2 hours.
