Fire Service Training Programs

INTRODUCTION: The following tapes cover a number of fire fighting situations and are introduced and narrated by veteran fire fighters.

FD-1: Stretching the Initial Attack Handline: (20 Min.)
This tape identifies the important considerations in stretching initial attack handlines such as horizontal versus vertical stretches and loads, demonstrates a formula for estimating accurate hose lengths based on the building, stair configurations and how they affect the stretch and well hole stretches as well as common stretching pitfalls and how and how to avoid them.
 
FD-2: SCBA Safety and Emergency Procedures: (20 Min.)
This video demonstrates the necessary steps for learning about SCBA procedures. The program covers methods for donning and doffing the equipment, maintaining the safe operation of the SCBA, handling emergencies and avoiding hazards.
 
FD-3: Advancing the Initial Attack Handline: ( 17 Min.)
This video outlines the various techniques and procedures for effectively deploying and operating the initial attack handline. The video describes the nozzle team, the role of each member of the team, the techniques for advancing the "line," and the use of nozzles. Safety issues, teamwork on the importance communications are also addressed in the video. Live fire footage is used to demonstrate efficient techniques for advancing a line and knocking down the fire.
 
FD-4 Fighting Car Fires: (20 Min.)
This program demonstrates a number of safe and effective techniques for extinguishing car fires. The main features and components of newer cars and how they affect fire fighting efforts as well as what to expect in fires with older makes and models. Video also demonstrates how to fight fires in vehicles with magnesium components. Video also explains what happens when the fire reaches a fuel tank and other hazards. The best way to make the fire approach as well as the safest ways to open hoods and trunks.
 
FD-5: Peaked-Roof Ventilation: (20 Min.)
Peaked-roof ventilation by fire fighters. This video demonstrates safe and effective peaked-roof operations and reviews the basics, construction methods, access, moving on the roof, tool operation and safety factors. The video presents in graphic detail important steps which will help improve vertical ventilation capabilities at fires with peaked roofs.
 
FD-6: Factory Inspections of New Fire Apparatus:
Specifying a compliant apparatus that will efficiently serve your community is a very involved process. Fire Departments can spend countless hours on apparatus specifications, but if you don’t follow through with proper factory inspections, the finished product could be less than perfect. Battalion Chief William C. Peters, a 28-year veteran of the fire service, walks you through a step-by step tour of a typical factory inspection from the Fire Department’s point of view. Among the topics covered are:
    • Where do you start?
    • Did you do it right?
    • Have you overlooked anything?
    • What should you do if you find something wrong?
    • Do the local officials think you are on vacation?
FD-7: Backdraft & Smoke Explosions: (15 Min.)
This program provides you with information on one of the most deadly fireground occurrences. In addition, the video covers the "how and why" of these two incidents, what the warning signs are, and suggestions on what you can do to avoid getting seriously hurt. Narrated by Vincent Dunn, Deputy Chief, FDNY, a 38-year veteran of the fire service.
 
FD-8: Flashover:
Flashover both dramatic and deadly. Learn when flashover occurs and safety techniques that can prevent or delay this dangerous event. Among the topics covered are:
    • What is Flashover?
    • What are the warning signs?
    • Learn how to delay or prevent it.
FD-9: Fire Apparatus Purchasing Handbook: (Hardcover book)
This 15 chapter text details the step by step instructions that you will need to write specifications, go out to bid, evaluate the bids, inspect the apparatus, and save your department money. Chief William Peters, a 28-year veteran of the Fire service, provides insight into various apparatus features, real-life mishaps, maintenance programs, and warranty information that will help you and the department purchase the right vehicle for the job. Among the topics covered are:
