In the past, there have been many tragic accidents where children and adults have fallen through unsafe ice on area ponds and drowned.

In order to reduce MIIA members' liability, we recommend that the following steps be taken for municipal ponds:

1. In addition to other signage on ponds such as "Open for Public Use," the following message should be posted:

"This ice may not be safe -- Use at your own risk."

2. Under no circumstances should any town employee or department indicate that ice is "safe." To do so signficantly increases your liability.

While the above steps will not eliminate potential liability, they should reduce your liability in the event of an accident.
