Safety and Loss Control Videos

The following are brief synopses of program content. The notation in parenthesis immediately following the title is the format and running time. All programs are in VHS format unless otherwise noted. These items are self-contained videotapes generally on specific topics such as back injury prevention, chain saw safety, computer terminal safety, etc. These tapes generally run approximately 10-30 Min. The programs contained therein are “stand-alone” materials and can be used by themselves or as part of a larger training program.

1 Minimizing Back Strains on the Job: (25 min.)
This program reviews the mechanics of the back and the reasons for lifting properly. It demonstrates proper lifting techniques in a variety of work locations.
 
2 Teacher Safety Training: (15 Min.)
This program reviews a number of techniques to be used by the classroom teacher to avoid injury on the job. It covers such topics as lifting, use of ladders and preventing slips and falls. The program is staged in an elementary school classroom. However, it presents material appropriate for teachers in all grade levels.
   
11 Plow Power: (15 min.)
An excellent program on proper snow removal techniques on town and city streets. The program was shot during a snow storm in Easton, Massachusetts.
 
12 Multiple Choice: (20 Min.)
This program utilizes six heavy equipment construction accidents to illustrate the necessity for employee awareness and the following of proper procedures when operating heavy equipment. Following each accident, the program lists a number of accident causes on screen and asks the viewer to determine which was the most likely cause of the accident.

13. Fire Extinguishers- The First Line of Defense: (26 Min.)
This program reviews the four types of fire extinguishers and demonstrates the proper use of such on actual small fires. This is an excellent program to utilize in conjunction with hands-on demonstrations with the municipal fire department.
   
15. Job Safety for Food Service Workers: (20 Min.)
This program reviews a number of kitchen operations, such as lifting, use of knives, cleaning of mixers and slicers, slips and falls, etc. It shows how to complete these daily work tasks in a safe manner.
 
16. Promoting Job Safety for Custodians: (15 Min.)
The program covers a variety of safety subjects pertaining to safe work practices for building custodians. Covered in the program are the safe use of ladders, cleaning of light fixtures, proper lifting techniques, mixing of cleaning chemicals, etc.
 
17. Back Care for Public Works Employees: (13 Min.)
A lifting program designed specifically for Department of Public Works/construction employees dealing with lifting and handling a variety of construction tools such as shovels, cement bags, pipes, etc.
 
18. Landscape Maintenance Equipment: (12 Min.)
This video addresses safety and maintenance procedures for hand and riding mowers, string trimmers, chippers, chain saws and other tools commonly used by Highway Departments, Tree Department, etc.
 
20. Treatment Plant Safety: (15 Min.)
This program enumerates the various hazards to be found in Water and Waste Treatment Plants including confined space entry procedures, use of ladders, chemicals, etc.
 
21. Dog Bite Prevention: (15 Min.)
An excellent program to present to meter readers, building, electrical, gas inspectors, police officers, and any municipal employee who is required to enter private property during the course of their duties. The program shows steps to be taken to minimize the possibility of being attacked by dogs.
 
22. Job Safety for Maintenance Employees: (18 Min.)
Designed for building maintenance workers. Demonstrates safe practices for the use of ladders, lifting techniques, electrical safety, slip-and-fall prevention, etc.
 
23. Tree Trimming Safety: (19 Min.)
This video covers the safe use of chain saws, chippers and hand tools. It also covers safe techniques for climbing and working in trees, and cutting trees and limbs on the ground.
 
24. Chlorine Safety: (15 Min.)
Overview of the use, safe handling and emergency procedures to be followed when handling 150 pounds and one-ton cylinders of chlorine.
 
25. Hearing Conservation: (9 Min.)
Brief overview of proper hearing conservation practices. Film demonstrates the use and care of several types of hearing protective devices.
 
26. Electrical Hazards and Trees: (20 Min.)
Program demonstrates proper procedures for tree trimming around high voltage electrical lines. Excellent for any employee involved in tree trimming and removal around power lines.
 
27. Residential Trash Pickup: (12 Min.)
Covers driver safety, vehicle safety, trash collection, operation of equipment and prevention of injuries encountered in residential trash collection operations.
 
28. The Maintenance Man that Fell into Trouble: (13 Min.)
Program is designed for Housing Authority maintenance employees. Reviews what to look for around buildings and grounds in order to reduce accidents to residents and employees. Written material, including leader’s guide with review questions available on request.

38. Solid Waste Management - Lifting Safety: (10 Min.)
Program shows proper lifting techniques and safe material handling procedures. Emphasis is on residential trash collection, but can be used for any Department of Public Works group.
 
39. Doing It Right - Proper Installation of Underground Storage Tank Systems: (40 Min.)
This program shows proper installation methods for installation of new underground storage tanks and related piping. Shows the types of EPA approved tanks and piping and installation techniques for them. CAUTION: This film shows US EPA requirements only, some of which differ from Massachusetts regulations.

40. Landscape Tools - Use and Safety: (22 Min.)
Shows basic techniques on how to select, use, store and maintain 12 common hand tools such as shovels, rakes, hoes and picks. Demonstrates proper safety procedures to reduce accidents and injuries.
 
41. A Custodian’s Guide to On-the-Job Safety: (22 Min.)
A program designed to acquaint custodial employees with information and techniques on safe practices in such areas as lifting, use of ladders, cleaning chemicals, electrical tools, etc. (Handout available on request)
 
43. Selection and Safe Use of Herbicides: (20 Min.)
Program reviews techniques for selection, site preparation and application of herbicides. Covers topics such as selective and non-selective herbicides, weather conditions, personal protective equipment, etc. Although specific to herbicides, some information also is relevant to use of insecticides. 44. Chain Saw Safety: (15 Min.)
Covers selection, inspection and proper use of gas-powered chain saws. Program reviews most common causes of chain saw injuries, and how to prevent them. (Handouts available on request)
 
45. Sportfield Safety - A Guide for Groundskeepers: (20 Min.)
A program designed for those who maintain athletic fields (i.e., baseball, football, soccer, etc.) Reviews inspection procedures, lighting and maintenance.
 
46. Working Safely with VDT’s (Video Display Terminals): (15 Min.)
This program covers the safe and proper use of VDT’s. The program concentrates on ways to avoid the most common problems associated with VDT’s: repetitive motion injuries, eye strain, and back problems. Excellent program for all employees using VDT’s on the job. (Handouts available on request)
 
47. Underground Safety - Confined Space Entry: (10 Min.)
Reviews the hazards associated with entering and working in confined spaces, outlines eight rules to follow to reduce hazards.
 
48. Underground Safety - Heavy Equipment Operation: (10 Min.)
Outlines safety techniques for heavy equipment operators at excavation worksites. Reviews 12 safe operating rules for equipment use. Although aimed at the operator, the program is also relevant to workers at the job site.
 
49. Classroom Cleaning: (18 Min.)
Demonstrates a step-by-step procedure for cleaning school classrooms. Lists equipment and materials to be used and techniques for completing the task efficiently and safely.
 
50. Restroom Cleaning: (20 Min.)
Demonstrates a step-by-step procedure for cleaning school restrooms. Lists equipment and materials to be used and techniques for completing the task efficiently and safely.
 
51. Hand Safety: (15 Min.)
This program, set in an industrial plant, shows typical hazards to hands and fingers and how to avoid these injuries. Discusses prevention and use of personal protective equipment (gloves) Note: This tape has some graphic photos of hand and finger injuries, i.e., burns, cuts, partial and complete finger amputations
 
52. Deadly Force - Do’s and Don’ts: (20 Min.)
Reviews some of the changes regarding police use of deadly force. The program uses two sources of authority: The US Supreme Court in Tennessee V. Garner and the International Association of Chiefs of Police and Bureau of Justice Assistance National Policy Center. The video puts the officer’s judgment to the test in a series of scenarios in which the viewers must decide whether the use of deadly force is warranted. The scenarios show the suspect’s use of guns, knives and automobiles.

53. Anatomy of a Chase: (38 Min.)
This program, prepared by the Denver Police Department, follows an actual pursuit. The pursuit is followed from beginning to end, with footage shot from a TV news helicopter.
 
54. When You Least Expect It - Driving Safety for Everyone: (22 Min.)
This video explains the importance of the driver’s being aware of what is going on inside, around, and ahead of him. It emphasizes the importance of awareness in prevention of accidents. Several accidents are recreated by stunt drivers. Although the video shows only automobiles, the skills and techniques demonstrated are valid for all drivers.
 
55. Safe Lifting and Carrying Techniques: (5 Min.)
A brief program reviewing safe lifting and carrying procedures. An excellent video to use in reviewing and reinforcing back injury prevention training in longer programs, such as videos #1, #17, #30 and #38. This video can be used in conjunction with other training sessions as a reminder to lift and carry properly.
 
56. Accident Investigation for Municipal Employees: (19 Min.)
This video reviews the procedures and techniques to use in investigating employee accidents. The program explains the steps and procedures to follow in conducting an accident investigation and completing a clear and concise supervisor’s investigation. Although the example used is somewhat lengthy, the information presented is excellent. This is the video used by MIIA Loss Control in our on-site accident investigation workshops. (Leader’s Manual available to borrow on request).
 
57. Reduce Your Risk: (15 Min.)
Presents personal safety your employees and their families can use to guard against crime while driving, parking or walking to and from their vehicles. Covers such situations as parking in public garages, and streets, precautions to use at intersections and in unfamiliar areas, etc.
 
59. Ladder Safety: (14 Min.)
A humorous approach to ladder safety. The video covers selection of the right ladder for the job, proper set-up and use as well as maintenance and storage of various types of ladders.
 
60. Traffic Control Through Work Zones: (21 Min.)
This program illustrates the proper equipment and techniques to be used to set up a work zone on a main street. It shows the proper location for signs, cones and other warning devices. Demonstrates the proper way to set up and remove traffic control devices. All equipment and techniques shown follow material in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

61. Confined Spaces: (20 Min.)
The program begins with an explanation of what constitutes a confined space. It moves on to recognition of hazardous gases and atmospheres, and defines the three basic types of hazardous atmospheres, i.e., combustible gases, vapors or dust, toxic gases and vapors, and asphyxiating atmosphere/oxygen deficient atmospheres. The program gives descriptions of some of the more prevalent hazardous atmospheres and their recognition. The program goes on to describe some of the physical hazards found in confined spaces such as high noise levels, lack of illumination, engulfment hazards, etc. The program emphasizes the importance of following proper pre-entry procedures emphasizing the necessity of checking the atmosphere immediately outside as well as inside the confined space with a gas detector. The final section of the program reviews safety equipment such as harnesses, rescue tripods, etc. This is an excellent introduction to the subject; however, this is not a full review of the OSHA Confined Space Entry Regulation.
 
62. Hands-On! - Emergency Vehicle Operations: (30 Min.)
This program reviews the duties and obligations of operators of emergency vehicles in traffic situations. It covers the proper techniques in operating emergency vehicles in a response situation. The emphasis is on safe operation of ambulances; however, the information is pertinent to operators of other emergency vehicles such as fire trucks and police cars. This program covers the following subjects: Legal Aspects, Collision Avoidance Techniques, Basic Driving Skills, Hazardous Conditions, and Proper Preparation.
 
63. Van and Truck Driving: (23 Min.)
This program emphasizes the importance of proper attitudes and safe driving skills for operators of vans and trucks. The narrator in the person of a tow truck driver reviews accidents caused by lack of knowledge of equipment, poor judgment, and poor driver attitude. The emphasis of the program is on importance of driver attitude. The program lists a variety of techniques which should be adopted by the driver, such as use of seatbelts, checking of mirrors, checking the load regularly, proper backing techniques, etc.
 
65. Playground Safety- Design and Maintenance: (20 Min.)
The program examines those conditions which tend to make playgrounds unsafe and outlines procedures and techniques to reduce playground hazards. The program reviews the most frequent types of playground injuries with an emphasis on the most prevalent cause of injuries: falls. The program reviews the types, depth and maintenance of cushioning materials to be placed under playground equipment. The program concludes with a review of design specifications and hazards with specific pieces of equipment such as swings, slides, spring toys, etc.
 
66. Don’t Fall For It- Preventing Slips, Trips and Falls: (20 Min.)
A well-produced program which discusses in considerable detail the two major causes of falls, i.e., loss of footing and loss of traction. The program is narrated by a professional stunt man and utilizing stunt professionals, illustrates numerous fall, tripping and slipping situations. Following each demonstration, the narrator discusses appropriate preventive actions. The program also discusses deliberate acts leading to slip, trip-and-fall accidents, such as running, horseplay, using shortcuts and using inappropriate or poorly maintained equipment. An excellently produced film appropriate for all job classifications.

67. Safe Practices for Custodial Workers: (20 Min.)
The program is designed specifically for building custodial employees which deals with a variety of topics including proper lifting, slip-and-fall prevention, and use of tools and equipment. A large portion of the program is dedicated to reducing exposures to blood borne pathogens (Hepatitis B, HIV) when cleaning spills containing bodily fluids.
 
68. Safety Awareness for Seasonal Employees: (23 Min.)
An excellent program designed specifically for outdoor seasonal employees including those operating power equipment. It outlines three key steps of safety awareness: hazard recognition, accident prevention, and hazard control. The program goes into detail on safe techniques to be used when operating equipment, working with chemicals, and procedures to take in the event of emergency. Proper lifting and material handling techniques are discussed as well as prevention of slips, trips and falls. Also contains a short section on safety around swimming pools. An excellent program to present to seasonal employees of Public Works, Parks, Recreation, etc.
 
69. Implementing an Incident Response Program: (18 Min.)
This program outlines the procedures to be taken in developing a flexible program to address unusual occurrences such as sewer backups, natural disasters, utility disruptions, hazardous materials spills, etc. The video outlines the four major areas of concern when developing an incident response program: written procedures, communications network, employee training, and designated spokesperson. A sample guide for developing an incident response handbook is available upon request.
 
70. Professional’s Guide to Lawnmower Safety: (25 Min.)
This program reviews the safe use and maintenance of four types of mowers: walk-behind rotary mowers, rotary ride-on mowers, reel mowers, and flail mowers. It outlines several safety procedures to be used in general as well as those specific to each of the mower types. In addition to emphasizing the safe use of the equipment, it also emphasizes the necessity of wearing proper clothing and personal protective equipment as well as checking the area to be mowed prior to starting work. This is a well produced program for all those operating grass cutting equipment.
 
71. Safety Inspection and Maintenance of Playgrounds: (21 Min.)
This program outlines the necessity for inspection and maintenance of playground areas following Consumer Product Safety Commission guidelines. The video, in addition to explaining procedures, also illustrates by means of a walk-around inspection specific defects and deficiencies to look for when inspecting specific pieces of playground equipment.
 
75. Safe Winter Driving: (17 Min.)
This tape outlines a variety of precautions to be taken when operating vehicles in the winter such as: being prepared for winter conditions, emergency equipment which should be carried, winter engine starting techniques, coping with a dead battery, accommodating for poor visibility, driving in rain, snow and ice, etc. Although the program uses automobiles rather than trucks extensively, this is an excellent film to remind any driver of the hazards involved in winter driving. 77. Seven Steps to Ladder Safety: (VHS-13 min.)
A ladder safety program outlining seven steps for the proper use, storage and maintenance of a variety of ladders including stepladders, extension ladders and straight ladders. Shows the proper techniques to utilize to avoid ladder accidents and injuries
 
78. Refuse Collection Safety: (15 Min.)
Sanitation workers have one of the highest rates of injuries among municipal workers. This program demonstrates proper safety procedures and covers a variety of topics including proper lifting, use of personal protective equipment such as gloves, boots, eye protection; checking of the vehicle prior to the work shift, safe packer operation, knowledge of hazardous chemicals, etc.
 
79. Avoiding Back Pain: (26 Min.)
An excellent tape on back safety specific to Public Works type operations. This tape demonstrates proper lifting and material handling techniques utilizing typical equipment and materials handled by Public Works employees.
 
80. Snowplow Safety: (23 Min.)
An excellent program on the safe operation of snow removal equipment. This tape focuses on the safety aspects of operating snowplows and sanders rather than techniques. It covers a variety of topics including pre-inspection of equipment, driving tips for snow and ice, as well as a variety of other safe operating techniques for the winter months.
 
81. Chipper Use and Safety: (15 Min.)
This program reviews the safe operation and maintenance of both rotary drum and disc/knife style chippers. Among the items discussed are proper inspection and maintenance of the chipper, location and proper operation of safety devices, proper clothing and personal protective equipment to wear including gloves, hearing protection, eye protection, etc. The program also covers the proper attachment and towing of chippers, set-up of chippers on a road, and proper feeding techniques.
 
82. The Professional’s Guide to Push Mower Safety: (21 Min.)
A program on the importance of knowing and following proper safety procedures for the use of push mowers. The program is divided into three parts. Part 1 covers the importance and use of safety equipment and clothing; Part 2 demonstrates the correct procedures for pre-starting, starting and operating the mower; Part 3 covers guidelines for proper care and maintenance of the push mower. This tape is useful both for new operators as well as a refresher for more experienced operators.
 
83. Ergonomic Safety for Computer Operators: (20 Min.)
A discussion which outlines the causes and preventive measures to be taken in reducing repetitive strain injury in the office environment. The program also reviews preventative measures for reducing eye strain, back problems, etc. The program focuses on the importance of matching the workplace and the employee for the purpose of both increased productivity and employee comfort. Among the points discussed are: importance of correct posture in preventing repetitive strain injuries; importance of a well-designed adjustable chair in reducing strains; workstation design (including height adjustability, keyboard position, keyboard mounting and location); maintaining proper focal distance to reduce eye strain; correct procedures for working off documents; and the physical environment (i.e., temperature, lighting, working space)
 
84. Trench Emergency: (16 Min.)
An excellent program on what to do in the event of a trench/excavation collapse. The program begins with a brief description of protective systems, i.e., shoring, trench boxes, etc., and the causes of cave-ins and collapses. The program contains an extensive discussion of how to react, what to do and what not to do in the event of a trench emergency. On-site procedures are outlined as well as demonstrations of common mistakes and their consequences. The program concludes with demonstrations on proper procedures and the reasons they must be followed. This program is a must-see for both those "in the trenches" and supervisors of those who work in excavations and trenches.

85. D.O.T. Drug and Alcohol Testing- Your Rights and Responsibilities: (20 Min.)
This tape is designed for driver training on the new DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Regulations. The program reviews the regulations, who must be tested, the types of tests to be performed and how the actual tests/sample collection is done. In order to be fully effective, this program should be shown in conjunction with the distribution of the DOT required written Drug and Alcohol Policy for Drivers. Note: The program does not reflect the recent reduction in percentage of alcohol random tests from 25% to 10% of eligible drivers.
 
86. Working Smart- Office Safety: (20 Min.)
An overview of office safety which covers a number of topics including preventing slips, trips and falls, and noise; working comfortably and safely at computer workstations; fire safety and proper lifting techniques.
 
87. Snowplow Safety- Parking Lots: (19 Min.)
This tape is ideal for pre- and in-season training for both novice and experienced snowplow operators on snow removal in parking lots. Topics addressed include: pre-season site inspection, scanning for hazards, clearing entrances and exits, working with other snow removal equipment and where to locate plowed snow. Can be used alone or with program #80 (Snowplow Safety)
 
88. Softball and Baseball Field Maintenance and Safety: (25 Min.)
A guide to the maintenance and upkeep of baseball/softball fields. Includes sections on installation and inspection of equipment such as bases; providing an obstruction free playing surface; maintenance of fencing and backstops; turf management, lighting maintenance and general safety considerations. A video reference manual and checklist are available upon request.
 
89. Transferring Students with Physical Disabilities (Part I): (18 Min.)
This tape describes and demonstrates the mechanics of transferring and lifting disabled students at the elementary school level. The tape demonstrates a number of transfers including: floor to wheelchair, wheelchair to chair (one and two person transfer), chair to toilet, chair to changing table, chair to standing table, wheelchair to walker and wheelchair to vehicle (two person)
 
90. Hands Off- Massachusetts Sexual Harassment Prevention and Compliance: (38 Min.)
This program details both the newly revised Massachusetts regulation on sexual harassment and how to get into compliance. Following the end credits, there is an eight-minute program specifically aimed at managers and supervisors.
 
91. Workplace Violence- Assessment and Prevention: (34 Min.)
This program, produced by the Colorado Municipal Pool, addresses the situation of threats and violence in the municipal workplace. The program enumerates a number of keys to minimizing threats in the workplace and protecting employees from the possibility of violence. The program also endeavors to make employees aware of the potential for violence and examines some of the risk exposures in the workplace. The program also profiles violent personalities, lists the types of threats and violence generally found in the workplace, and how to prevent violent episodes in the municipal workplace. The program also shows how to develop an action plan to reduce threats and violence in the municipal workplace.

92. Transferring Students with Physical Disabilities-Part II: (18 Min.)
This program demonstrates lifting and transferring techniques for secondary school students. It demonstrates how to make transfers safe for both the student and the staff member's Techniques demonstrated are different due to the size of the students at the higher grade levels which makes transfers more difficult. The program demonstrates techniques in using mechanical lifts as well as manual lifts such as: transferring from wheelchair to chair, transferring in and out of automobiles and vans, two-person transfers from wheelchair to toilet and from toilet back to wheelchair, wheelchair to a platform and platform to wheelchair. The program also demonstrates lifts done with and without the assistance of the student.
 
93. Playground Supervision: (16 Min.)
This tape is designed to provide guidance to playground supervisors in providing adequate supervision on playgrounds. The program is divided into the following four parts: 1) The role of the supervisor, 2) supervising techniques, 3) playground hazards, 4) medical emergencies. Covered in the program are the importance of communication between the supervisor and playground user, positioning of the supervisor to maximize control over the playground, different techniques in supervising low risk and high risk activities. It also provides some information on identifying hazards such as damaged equipment, types of behavior which can lead to injury on equipment such as swings and slides.
 
94. Groundskeeping Safety- Be a Pro: (17 Min.)
A guide to the maintenance of grounds, trees, shrubs, etc., for those individuals charged with the maintenance of these areas. The program demonstrates how to keep grounds maintenance personnel safe by the use of personal protective equipment, application of general safety rules and implementation of safe work practices for equipment and chemical uses. The program emphasizes the importance of being safe, not sorry, by knowing the equipment and chemicals to be used as well as their hazards, the importance of wearing proper clothing and personal protective equipment and using all equipment, chemicals, etc., in a safe manner. The program also provides brief overviews on the safe operation of the following pieces of equipment: Mowers (walk behind and riding), trimmers, blowers, chain saws, and edgers. There is also a discussion on how to avoid repetitive strain injuries to the arms, wrists, etc.
 
95. Are you at Risk- Asbestos Awareness: (20 min)
This program is designed to provide employees who may encounter asbestos information on asbestos containing materials. The video describes the three types of asbestos and how to identify them and other possible asbestos containing materials in the workplace. The program emphasizes that employees must not touch or work with these materials, rather they should report to their supervisor so that appropriate action can be taken.
 
96. Cave-in- Trenching and Shoring Safety : (20 Min.)
program covers a number of topics regarding excavation safety. The video discusses what types of excavations require protection such as sloping, shoring, shielding and trench boxes. Also covered are soil type identification, hazardous atmospheres and general safety in excavations.

97. Road Rage- How to protect Yourself: (15 min )
With the great increase in traffic and incidence of road rage it is important for each driver to know how to recognize the common situations that lead to conflict between drivers and what steps you can take to control and avoid them. This program discusses a number of steps that can be taken to avoid becoming involved in a dangerous situation with other drivers. Among the techniques discussed are keeping on schedule so as to avoid rushing; avoiding escalating a bad situation; how to reduce miscommunications between drivers such as hand signals, eye contact etc. The program also enumerates a number of techniques on how to control your behavior etc. points out that as a driver you have control over two situations, specifically your personal actions and your own vehicle. The program concludes with how to protect yourself should you get into a conflict with another driver. In this section the tape discusses a number of situations including avoiding getting boxed in, use of a cell phone if available; locking doors, not stopping etc.

This program discusses techniques to safely and efficiently operate the aforementioned 3 tools. Among the topics covered are the choice and use of personal clothing and personal protective equipment including gloves, ear protection, eye protection, leg chaps and safety shoes. The tape discusses the use of power equipment in various situations and how to choose the proper type of equipment for each job. Also covered are cleaning and simple field maintenance and refueling techniques.
 
99. How to Prevent Slips and Falls: (16 min.)
This program although a bit dry, deals effectively with explaining one of the primary causes of slip and fall injuries, a loss of friction. It follows a logical approach, beginning with the importance of cleaning sand etc. from the entrances of buildings to prevent tracking into structures and creating hazards inside the building. It then goes on to discuss the importance of mats and keeping them clean and well maintained. The program continues with an explanation of floor maintenance including dealing with wet floors, housekeeping, cleaning procedures etc. The program also deals with the importance of utilizing the proper wax for different floor surfaces and the importance of assuring that waxes do not become contaminated with dirt etc. which can create problems. It also discusses the importance of recognizing and correcting hazards, maintenance and keeping work areas clean.
 
100. Protecting Custodians From Bloodborne Pathogens: (20 min.)
This program is designed specifically for custodians in large public buildings such as schools and describes how to avoid accidental exposure to blood- borne pathogens. The program is divided into three sessions: bloodborne pathogens and exposure control, how to clean up different types of spills, and special issues. In the first session on personal protective equipment and exposure control the program discusses the importance of choosing and wearing the proper type of personal protective equipment such as gloves, eye protection and clothing protection. The second session describes how to clean up different types of bodily fluid spills from hard surfaces, walls etc. The final session discusses reporting procedures following a spill and how to handle such items as rubbish containers and bags to prevent possible exposure and injury.
 
101. Chain Saw Safety: (21 min.)
This program provides information on how to use chain saws safely and efficiently. The three sessions of the program cover personal protective equipment and clothing; safety features of saws and maintenance; and how to operate chain saws safely. The session on personal protective equipment discusses various types of equipment such as hand, eye and ear protection as well as wearing proper clothing and leg chaps. The second part of the program discusses the importance of matching the size and type of saw to the specific job and how to fuel and do simple maintenance and sharpening in the field. The final session discusses the specific operating techniques for trimming, limbing, felling and bucking. A number of safety techniques are discussed for each type of operation including tips to avoid kickback.
 
102. Kitchen Safety and Sanitation: (9 min.)
This program presents a very brief overview of a number of topics dealing with kitchen safety and sanitation. Among the safety topics discussed are electrical safety, lighting, fire extinguishers, avoidance of falls, proper footwear, lifting techniques, proper ladders and proper use, storage and cleaning of knives. The section on sanitation provides a brief explanation of what causes food board contamination problems, how to sanitize surfaces properly and wearing of proper clothing and head gear and hand sanitation.

This tape is divided into 5 parts outlining the proper rules for ladder usage. Included are upper ladder selection, maintenance techniques for ladders, proper ladder placement to climb the ladder and proper climbing procedures. Throughout the program the necessity of working safely with ladders to prevent accidents is emphasized.
 
104. Back Safety For Landscape, Maintenance and Custodial Workers: (20 min.)
This video reviews proper lifting and material handling for a variety of situations. The program begins with a review of body mechanics and techniques for proper lifting including footing, the proper stance etc. Among the specific situations reviewed are: lifting above the shoulders, lifting and turning, pushing loads and 2 person lifts. The program concludes with a description of and techniques for preventing common back injuries and a discussion on the proper use of back braces.
 
105. Introduction to Special Education Bus Driving: (18 min.)
The first in a series of 3 tapes dealing with special education bus driving, this tape covers defensive driving techniques, loading and unloading students and securing wheelchairs in the bus. The program discusses such things as the importance of using a soft touch when steering and braking and accelerating, the proper use of wheelchair lifts and techniques for tying down wheelchairs utilizing the latest federal standards required for tie downs and safety straps. It also discusses how to avoid injuries to both the student and driver.

This video will aid your municipality in developing and administering a successful volunteer management program. Topics covered include: development of a volunteer manual, recruitment, screening, functions and duties, training and safety. While operating or working around construction equipment, it is vital to know proper hand signals for everyone’s safety. Due to the noise generated by this equipment, it is essential for safe and efficient operations for all concerned, to agree on the appropriate hand signals. This tape covers hand signals for construction equipment as developed by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE). It also demonstrates each hand signal. 119. Wheel Loader Operating Techniques : (20 min.)
Covers a number of the essential safe operating techniques including: driving in traffic, trailer hauling (loading/ securing etc.) Other topics include : safe operating techniques at the worksite, such as the importance of compensating for weather conditions and its effects on operations, the importance of knowing and understanding hand signals, overhead clearance and height limits when operating around and in buildings and sheds. An emphasis is placed on the safe operation of wheel loaders around other employees, including not using a loader bucket as a work platform. Operating techniques on uneven terrain and on slopes is also covered. Also includes a discussion on tipping load vs carrying load and the effect of bucket height on operating safety.

This program reviews operating procedures for both the operator and those working immediately adjacent to equipment and the importance of thinking about every move before you make it. It reviews the major causes of accidents, use of personal protective equipment, soil conditions and types, traffic control and conditions, equipment excavation spoil positioning, and the importance of marking underground utilities. It makes the point that 95% of all accidents involving backhoes and loaders involve overconfidence on the part of the operator.

This program demonstrates the proper techniques for preparing and implementing the evacuation of a school bus safely and quickly. The program is divided into 3 sections: Safety issues, training exercise, and re enactment of an evacuation. It emphasizes the importance of the driver exercising good judgement and maintaining control of the situation at all times.
