LO/TO has been one of OSHA’s Top10 most cited regulations for several years. This course will include: the elements of a lockout/tagout program; identifying the types of energy addressed by a LO/TO program; review of the seven steps of shutdown and five steps to return a piece of equipment or machine to operation; authorized and affected employees; understanding that the written Lockout/Tagout Program is not the procedure for releasing energy of the equipment/machinery, and the MA Department of Labor Standards LO/TO templates.

Participants will work in small groups to develop the outline of a written LO/TO program, and a written procedure for releasing energy from a piece of equipment or machine at their workplace. To accomplish these tasks, participants are requested to bring an operating manual for one or two pieces of equipment or machinery used in their workplace. Each group will choose an operator’s manual from those available and the group will identify 2-4 sources of energy and isolation procedures; develop an outline for a written LO/TO program for the equipment/machinery; identify affected and authorized employees; determine the seven steps of shutting down the equipment/machine; identify the types of LO/TO equipment necessary (i.e. locks, tags, valve covers, circuit breaker locks, etc.).

In addition, if a written LO/TO program used in the participants’ workplace is available please bring a copy of the document to class. If a written LO/TO procedure for the equipment or machinery is available the participant may also bring that to class.
