Please note, MIIA is following OSHA training guidelines so training certificate and Rewards credit will only be given to those participants who remain on camera the entire training.
 
This course is designed for police officers who work on or near roadways. The course focuses on the MA DOT Work Zone Safety Guidelines for Temporary Traffic Control and refers to the Manual for Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) with MA DOT amendments. Participants will watch a video developed by the MA Department of Labor Standards that addresses the safe and effective use of law enforcement personnel in roadway work zones. 
 
Working in small groups participants will discuss and present an experience they had while working on the road in a work zone. Content presented may include what went well and what needed to be improved. Drawings, photographs and diagrams of work zones will be incorporated into activities.
 
An in-depth review of the MA DOT Temporary Traffic Control Typical Details and MA Guidelines for MA DOT, Municipalities, Utilities and Contractors (referred to in this course as the Flip Book) including who is responsible for designing, setting up and maintaining the work zone; spacing of devices including signs, cones, personnel; and the order of set up and break down of the work zone.
 
Discussion regarding worker safety on roadways; injury and fatality data related to falls, struck by, electrical, caught in/between and confined space projects and what controls to implement that would eliminate the hazards; MA roadway accident, injury and fatality statistics; MA Move Over Law; Personal Protective Equipment including retroreflective apparel.
